Very Low Frequency (VLF) AC Cable Testing

Session Type: Technical Workshop
Track Number: IT-4
Location: Show Floor
Room: Room 2
Speaker: Mike Peschel, High Voltage, Inc.

Date: Monday, October 04, 2010
Time: 3:00 PM - 3:50 PM

Description:

Electrical contractors install and test all types of cable and cable post installations. Sometimes their customers ask them to test cable using their own preferred methods and other times the testing method is specified by the customer’s engineering company. Rather than older and less desirable DC voltage methods, the new preferred method to test shielded power cable is Very low Frequency AC Technology, or VLF. From 5 kV industrial application cable to 35 kV utility customer cable, wind farms, and other high power applications, VLF AC testing of the cable is often the method used. This session will acquaint the audience with VLF testing – the technology, the methods, and the equipment.
